Strawberry Picking...

Just a short post this fine Wednesday, short but alas very summery.

This summer, my boyfriend and I decided to go strawberry picking. We went around the end of June which is a great time to go if it is strawberries you wish to pick.

The raspberries and other berries aren't quite ready yet but the strawberries are huge red jewels just waiting to be picked before the hoards of pickers come in July.

We went to Garsons Garden Centre to pick our strawberries. You can pick all types of things here from courgettes to blackberries to potatoes to sunflowers. Just look at the picking calendar on Garsons website to see which plants are ready to be harvested.

We picked two 1kg punnet (so 2kg in total) which came to around £10, much cheaper than supermarkets and just look at the quality of these berries!

We were very good and not a single berry passed our lips during the picking so to reward ourselves we had lunch in the garden centre. Boy had a burger with sweet potato fries and I had a smoked salmon bagel. It's a nice little cafe/restaurant set in a large conservatory so definitely check it out if you come to do some picking. Treat yourself to one of their giant muffins too, the salted caramel one looks insanely yummy.

With your strawberry purchase you get a half price voucher for double cream at the shop which we gladly snapped up and actually used in the snickers cupcake icing from my other blog post.

I returned to Garsons late July and the strawberries had all been picked! The raspberries were absolutely stunning at this point though so I returned home with a kilo that day. Make sure you think about what you are going to do with all your berries otherwise they will go to waste. You can make berry jam, berry cake, use them for breakfast, make coulis or even a berry dessert like pavlova or jelly.

It's a great activity for a day out especially if it is a sunny day, take anyone with you except your dog as unfortunately they are not allowed in the pick your own fields.
